CCTV cameras at DU fail to click

Over two months have elapsed since the gory murder of Radhika Tanwar, a Delhi University (DU) near her college in south Delhi.

As a remedial step, around 46 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed in the premises of North Campus colleges to increase security for students. The only hitch: the control room at the Maurice Nagar Police Station of north Delhi is yet to start working.

According to police officials, the monitoring system at the police station is facing shortage of wire cables.
On March 12, after the Radhika Tanwar incident had sparked outrage across the city, Delhi police had issued an advisory for all DU colleges and hostels to install CCTV cameras in their premises. The policy has been adopted by most institutes in the last two months.

According to police officials, in the last two weeks, around 14 cases of molestation have been reported in the Maurice Nagar police station area.

IB Rani, DCP of North district said: "Due to the technical problem, we did not connect the operation connection system of all the CCTVs with our monitoring system. So far, we have been unable to mechanic to sort out our problem."

The DU new academic session will be starting soon. For the first time, several cameras have been installed at Patel Chest, Chattra Marg and Jai Jawan Chowk many more to keep an eye on anti-social elements.

Outrage
The secretary of Delhi University Student's Union (DUSU), Neetu Dabas said, "We already had a word with senior police officials about this matter and they told us that there will be some technical problems in monitoring the CCTV cameras and they will rectify the error soon. After this no action has been taken yet in this regard.

All I can say is that, it's completely the irresponsibility of the police officials and they had taken the matter very lightly. In last two weeks many cases of molestation has been reported including the lady constable in a civil dress."
