Without the stately presence of David Byrne, our world would be a poorer place. Who else could make a muse of Imelda Marcos, former First Lady of the Philippines known more for her collection of shoes than anything else she may have accomplished?
Without the stately presence of David Byrne, our world would be a poorer place. Who else could make a muse of Imelda Marcos, former First Lady of the Philippines known more for her collection of shoes than anything else she may have accomplished? Who else could then make the unlikely decision to collaborate with DJ Fatboy Slim for a concept album based on Marcos?
The result, a double-CD called Here Lies Love (it's what Marcos wanted as an epitaph), does something one assumed only cinema could ufffd it takes a figure from history and makes us see her in a new light. Bryne gives us 22 tracks by as many guest vocalists, archival photographs of the Marcos family, and a booklet to help us make sense of it all. As for the music, much of it is great simply because the people doing the singing are.
With voices like Natalie Merchant (Order 1081), Santigold (Please Don't), Florence Welch (Here Lies Love), Cyndi Lauper (Seven Days) and Tori Amos (You'll Be Taken Care Of), owning this is pretty much a no-brainer.
Five years in the making, you may still dismiss this as easy listening. Listen carefully though, and you'll be hooked. Take another bow, Mr Bryne.
