Maria Sharapova, her first title of 2013 safely under her belt, is poised to join the battle for the World No 1 spot in women's tennis. Sharapova's 6-2, 6-2 win over Caroline Wozniacki in the title match gave her a second Indian Wells WTA crown, to go with the one she captured in 2006.
Her run to Sunday’s final ensured she will supplant Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka as World No 2 behind Serena Williams.

Sharapova said: “No 1 is a great number. Is it something that all of us want? Absolutely. No doubt. It’s a no-brainer question. But at this point in my career, titles and Grand Slams are a bigger priority.”
The Russian won a career Slam with the 2012 French Open, when she also briefly became World No 1 for the first time since 2008.
