Chhota Rajan ups Mumbai Police burden

After two decades on the run, underworld don Chhota Rajan is now all set to return to India. He is believed to have surrendered before the Indian agencies in a covert operation.

As per the reports, Rajan was arrested in the Indonesian resort island of Bali after he stepped off a Garuda Indonesia flight from Sydney on Sunday morning. The Bali police had been tipped off by Australia about a passenger with an Indian passport using the alias ‘Mohan Kumar.’

Meanwhile the police sources have a different story altogether. They say that Rajan’s surrender was well coordinated with the help of India’s Security Advisor, Ajit Doval almost a month before the news of his arrest broke.

In the current scenario where the BJP government could not stop patting its back for nabbing one of India’s most wanted criminals, Rajan’s arrest has surely not gone well with the intelligence agencies.

The reason — Rajan’s detention has taken away their major source of information on India’s most wanted gangster Dawood Ibrahim. Till date, RAW and IB have carried out several covert operations to eliminate Dawood’s gangsters using Rajan’s network in India and abroad.

The second major concern of the intelligence officers is that while working with Rajan, several officials from India had developed a rapport with the underworld don. These officers now fear that during interrogations Rajan might spill the beans on them.

It is also important to note that Rajan’s arrest will also increase the burden on Mumbai police who will now have to monitor one more don in the city apart from Arun Gawli.

Gawli had been giving a tough time to the local police by running his extortion network in south Mumbai following which there is no end to the number of cases getting registered against him. Anticipating a similar threat, the officers believe that Rajan who would be now close to his empire, might try to rebuild his network after his comeback.
