Home Minister made daughter-in-law, granddaughter purchase tickets to watch aquatics events

It may be regarded as tokenism but it at least shows that the Home Minister has got his priorities right. On Tuesday morning, P Chidambaram visited the S P Mukherjee Stadium with daughter-in-law Srinidhi and granddaughter Aditi. Whereas the Home Minister was allowed inside, his relatives had to purchase tickets to enter the stadium.

Not just that. After entering, while Chidambaram followed protocol and went inside the VIP enclosure, his granddaughter and daughter-in-law sat on the spectators' seats.

"Both of them watched the swimming events from there and the three of them came together only after leaving the stadium," a source said.u00a0

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Pool, located at Talkatora road, is being used for aquatics events in the Delhi Commonwealth Games. It has a capacity of 5000 people.

A few days ago, Chidambaram had walked about 500 metres at the Siri Fort Sports Complex. That's because though he had an accreditation card and his car carried an entry sticker, the accompanying security officer and driver did not have necessary documents.

Security personnel politely told the Home Minister that he and his car could enter the venue but the security officer and the driver would not be permitted.

Chidambaram abided by the Delhi police officials' request and got out of his car and walked nearly half-a-kilometre to enter the venue as his staff and car remained in the parking area.

A senior Delhi police official said that such events and such personalities instil confidence in the police force and quality of security gets better.

Delhi police on Tuesday detained a teenager for making a hoax call claiming that a bomb has been placed inside the Commonwealth Games Village, creating panic among the security establishment.
The call to the Police Control Room at around 2.30 p.m. prompted a thorough security check at the residential complex which hosts about 7,000 athletes.
"Dog squads and bomb disposal teams surveyed the 63.5 hectare area, which has 14 blocks, 34 towers and 1,168 air-conditioned apartments," a senior police official said.
