Police suspect destruction spree to be handiwork of drunk young people looking for cheap thrills; incident shocks area

Chikhali rude jolt: 30 cars damaged in overnight rampage

The residents of More Wasti in Chikhali received a rude shock yesterday when they woke up in the morning to find 30 four-wheelers parked around their homes damaged. The police think the unidentified people who went on the rampage in the wee hours smashed vehicle windscreens with stones and hockey sticks.

They suspect it to be the handiwork of some youths in an inebriated condition who were just looking for cheap thrills. Apart from the More Wasti, vehicles in Mehtre Wasti, Patil Wasti, Tahmane Wasti and Sant Krupa Housing Society in Chikhali were also targeted.

“I woke up in the morning and saw my car windscreen damaged by someone,” Arvind Magar, a resident of More Wasti, said. “After enquiring in the area, I came to know that several vehicles were targeted by some miscreants in the wee hours of Tuesday.”

He ruled out the possibility of gang rivalry being behind the hooliganism. “There is no such gang rivalry in our area and it must be done by some people with freak mentality,” Magar said. “After this vehicle ransacking episode, the residents of the area are under great fear and there is a serious question mark over the law and order situation.” Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dehu Road) Vinayak Dhakne also ruled out the gang rivalry angle.

“It seems that some daredevil hooligans must have done this act in an inebriated condition and the rivalry angle between any gangs is ruled out as there are no such gangs in the area who can execute such acts,” Dhakne said. “We have formed a team to nab the hooligans and soon they will be behind bars.” The whole episode took place right under the noses of two police chowkies located at Kudalewadi and Sane Chowk, both places being near the area where the vehicles were damaged.
