This year's Republic Day is especially poignant because it falls exactly two months after the Mumbai terror attacks. Churchgate resident Amit Lall (37) will begin a 'drive for peace and unity' from the Gateway of India on January 26 at 7 am.

"My mission is to meet naval officers along each coast and prove that we collectively cannot be cowed down by terrorism. I live at Churchgate and was lying unwell and helpless in my house when the terrorists struck.

I was angry and frustrated that I was physically unable to rush to help the victims during the carnage," said Lall.

Another strong provocation for Lall's mission was, "On 26/11, my mother was at the CST station, in a train going to Allahabad. The train left at 9.25 pm, a couple of minutes before the terrorists struck.

It was the last train out from the station that night," explained Lall.

He added, "I usually drive to Chennai or New Delhi for work, instead of catching a flight," adding that, he would need 1,500 litres of fuel for the mission. The businessman, who is into garment exports, says his mom will look after the enterprise while he is away.u00a0
