With the increasing number of vehicles on the city roads, there is also a rise in violation of traffic rules. To ease traffic problems in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and City Traffic Police (CTP) will introduce a hi-tech Intelligent Transport System (ITS) from April.

A total of 50 cameras have been installed at 30 prominent junctions in the city and a control room has been developed at Swargate. With the advanced system, a traffic police officer will be able to sit in the control room and prepare a chalan for violators without having to step out.

A still camera and a video camera have been installed at busy junctions to keep a vigil on violators. The cameras have an option of flash that can be used in the night. "The presence of such cameras will automatically compel vehicle users to follow traffic rules," said explained Srinivas Bonala, PMC traffic planner and additional city engineer. He added, "Photos and video clippings will act as proof to charge offenders."

Bonala explained, "The RTO is furnishing details of the updated data of all the 14 lakh registered vehicle numbers and users to enforce this system,"

The PMC has given the contract for the Rs 14.5 crore ITS to China-based Unihz International Company that is a leader in the field of traffic violation detection system.

"The company has provided cameras for Speed Limit Violation Detection System (SLVDS) and Red Light Violation Detection System (RLVDS), said Bonala. The traffic signal synchronising system that is being used in the ITS at present, has been designed by Kerala-based KELTRON Electronics Company.

"The company experts are preparing the hardware and software for the signalling system," said Bonala.
The system will be automatically monitored by using various sensors to capture the traffic flow in volumes and the timing of signals can be adjusted accordingly," he added.

This will make a dynamic change in the signal timings. The entire system will be functional, only after special training is given to the traffic police. Only work on the software configuration task remains to be completed.
