Taking note of the report published in mid-day (‘Rare Baobab tree attacked in Aarey Milk Colony’, August 27) wherein it was highlighted how miscreants were targeting a rare Baobab tree, authorities from the local ward office visited the spot and took stock of the situation. They even warned the contractor, constructing a cemetery in the vicinity, of legal action if the tree was harmed in the process.

Tree Authority member Niranjan Shetty said, "After the article was published in mid-day, the officials visited the location and informed us that they would be frequenting the spot to ensure that no harm is caused to the rare Baobab tree."
A person who visits the colony regularly held the contractor responsible for harming the tree. He said the tree got damaged while the labourers were dumping mud near the cemetery that is being built on the Aarey Road that goes towards Marol. Less than 40 Baobab trees survive in the city.
