Three police teams from Mumbai went to Rajasthan to arrest an auto driver who is a suspect in a Malvani murder case; armed villagers blocked their way and fired in the air
For once, the police are on the receiving end of gunfire for trying to arrest a prime accused in a murder case. On January 23, a woman’s body was discovered around 8 am at Danapani Road, near Madh Marve, at Malvani. The throat appeared to be slit with a sharp weapon. Immediately, the photo of the deceased was sent to all police stations and was stuck at public places for identification.

On February 1, the deceased was identified as Rehana Shaikh (30), a resident of Indranagar, Vakola, and lived with her three children. Shaikh had divorced her husband a few years ago and was working with a plastic company near Hyatt Hotel at Santacruz.
During investigation, the police came to know that Shaikh was having an affair with one Bahadur Virendra Singh (22), an autorickshaw driver, who is a resident of Chikoowadi, Malad. When the police went through the Call Detail Report (CDR) of Shaikh’s mobile phone, they came to know that Singh was the last person who called her. The CDR also indicated that the duo was at Malvani on January 23 and most calls from Shaikh’s mobile were made to Singh.
However, when the police reached Singh’s residence, they were told that he had left for Dawalpur district, his hometown, in Rajasthan, with his family on January 24. Following this piece of information, three teams of Mumbai police reached Dawalpur on the same day. However, they were surprised to find villagers armed with guns blocking their way. The villagers also fired in the air when the Mumbai police tried to break their way through. According to the police, the local police was also not helpful and they have not been able to arrest the accused yet.
One team of Mumbai police has returned while two teams are still trying to figure out a way to arrest Singh. “Investigations in the case are on. Due to some problems, I have not been able to contact the two teams in Rajasthan,” Senior Police Inspector Abdulrauf Shaikh, Malvani police station said. “As of now, Singh is the prime suspect in Rehana Shaikh’s murder case,” he added. u00a0
