Crackers set shop in flames

A fire burst out at a grocery store last night in Akashdeep Society at Dhairi village off Pune Sinhagad highway.

Cause of fire
The fire started at 9.30 pm when sparks from a cracker that burst nearby fell on the crackers kept on the shop's counter. The crackers caught fire and as a result the fire spread inside the shop as well.

The fire-brigade brought the fire under control after it was informed by the local residents.

A fire-tender and a tanker was used to bring the fire under control. Food grains, furniture and milk products kept in the shop were destroyed.

The fire-brigade officials suspect that the shop did not have a licence to sell fire-crackers and an inquiry is going on.

"We are trying to question the nearby shopkeepers and people staying in the society about the same. So far, we have not got any clue," said Prabhakar Umratkar, Station Officer, PMC Fire Briagde at Sinhagad road.

"If the shop owner was selling crackers, we will take legal action."

This reporter visited the spot at 11.30 pm and spoke to the shop owners Santosh Todkar and his brother Murlidhar. They said that children were bursting crackers opposite the shop that caused the fire.

Todkar brothers were not ready to open the shutter of the shop and argued that the keys were not with them.
