A fact of the modern times is that there's no piece of mind when credit is due. Former Air India employee Tauqir Khan has now decided to get rid of this headache and move consumer court against a private bank. The bank says Tauqir made transactions worth Rs 85000 with his credit card and is yet to pay it back while Tauqir claims he is the victim of a fraud.

According to the Faridabad-resident, on February 13, 2009 a purportedu00a0 representative of HDFC bank Rajiv called him up (from the mobile no. 9891870975) and asked him to upgrade his Gold Credit Card to Platinum and advised him to give the Gold Card back to the banku00a0 by handing it over to the executive after breaking it up into four pieces and scratching out the CVV (Card Verification Value) number.

"On February 15, 2009 when a bank executive came to my home I had gone to catch a movie at PVR cinema in Faridabad's Sector 15. The executive gave me a call informing me about his visit. I called my mother and asked her to handover the pieces of the old card to him. After picking up the pieces, he told me that my new platinum card would be delivered within the month. A few hours later I received a call from the bank informing me that a transaction of Rs 85000 had been made using my credit card," said Tauqir.

Naturally, Tauqir was dumbfounded. "The timing of the transaction was 1540(03:40pm) and at that time I was at the theatre watching a movie with my brother and sister. I also have those movie tickets with me as proof. I was not aware about the transaction and it was very shocking since I didn't even have that credit card with me. How is it possible for me to be at two places at the same time and how can I make purchases with a credit card that I have already handed over to the bank executive?" he asked.

"When I received the call from the bank I asked the phone representative to block the card immediately and also requested her to investigate the Rs 85000 transaction. While investigating the case the bank told me to make a payment of Rs.3750 and gave me the assurance that the interest would not apply and the matter would be solved at the earliest. So I followed their instructions," Tauqir added.

The investigations continued. "After a few days, an executive from the bank came to my home along with photographs of some fraudsters so that my mother could try and recognise the person who she handed over the card to. I also had a salary account in the same bank. What they did next was they debited my June 2010 salary from my account without even informing me," claimed Tauqir.

"Now they call me up whenever they want and they even abuse my family regarding the payment. They are harassing me and my family and I have no other option but to move court," he lamented.

The Other Side
As a rule we communicate and educate our customers not to hand over the card to anyone, not even to the executive. In case of a card upgrade we ask the customer to crush the card and keep it with himself. In this case the customer obviously didn't crush the card as a broken card cannot be used.u00a0u00a0
