According to police officials, the incident took place in the wee hours of Sunday. The accused, Naina Pawar, her husband, Atul, and a third unidentified person, attacked Kamal Mane and strangulated her with a sari. Mane’s niece, Kranti Desai, woke up and witnessed the incident. The trio then threatened Desai and told her to keep her mouth shut.

“The third accused in the case is still unidentified, as no one had seen him before at the Mane residence. After the murder, the accused and the niece didn’t bother to take the deceased to the hospital. They just started preparing for the last rites,” said an officer.

However, during Mane’s funeral, when everyone asked Desai about her aunt’s death, she broke down and confessed to what she had seen. The police say that the daughter wanted the house in Sutar Chawl, Mohite Patil Nagar, where they all stayed, to be registered under her name.

“Naina and Atul Pawar pestered Mane to transfer the house to them, to which Mane had always refused. This had resulted in fights on several occasions. However, the niece had always stayed with her aunt.

Because of this, Naina thought that the house would go to her. This led to her planning the murder,” added an officer from the Mankhurd police station. The absconding trio has been booked under section 302 (murder) and section 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. u00a0
