Dead engineer's husband was crying too much

Cops say Deepak Satpute's overreaction on seeing wife's body roused their suspicion. He was arrested on wednesday

Had Deepak Satpute (34), not 'overreacted' at the sight of his wife's body the police would have never suspected him.

Deepak, a businessman, brought his wife Smita (32), a techie, to the Aditya Birla Hospital late on Monday night.
But she was pronounced dead on arrival. She had been strangulated to death. Incidentally, this is the second female techie murder in less than a week's time.

Said PI Ratansigh Yadav, the investigating officer, "As we removed the cloth from the body, Deepak collapsed and started weeping loudly as if he was seeing it for the first time."

According to the police, Deepak had not shown any sign of grief when the doctors had informed him of the death. "This triggered our suspicion about his role in the death," added Yadav.

The suspicion only grew stronger when Smita's mother Rajani Vasant Hagavane filed a complaint at the Sangavi police station, alleging that Deepak used to harass Smita emotionally and physically because of his parents' complaints over trivial matters.

Marital problems
The police said Deepak and Smita, an engineer, were married for five years and had been having problems for three years. They were on the verge of filing for a divorce. Incidentally, they had been living separately for over a year and had come back together only last year. The couple has a four-and-a-half-year-old son, who was at his paternal grandparents' place at the time of the incident.

Said Yadav, "Deepak took a neighbour's help to take his wife to the hospital. He lied to the neighbour that when he opened the flat he found Smita lying on the bed. As a result, the neighbour readily helped him. Deepak sat in the back, holding Smita, while the neighbour drove them to the hospital."

The Sangavi police yesterday arrested Deepak and his parents Vimal and Viththal Satpute from their home in Pimpale Saudagar.

All three, who were presented in Pimpri sessions court, have been sent to police custody.
Smita's brother Pawan said, "We don't want to comment. We are in shock."
