3 dead, 2 hurt in Turbhe landslide
Three stone quarry workers were killed and two others injured in a landslide at MIDC area in Turbhe, Navi Mumbai, on Monday morning
All were carrying out stone crushing work when the incident occurred. The landslide is said to have occurred due to heavy rainfall in the area. 68.02 mm of rainfall was recorded in the satellite city till 5pm on Monday. The deceased have been identified as Palunj Tapu (22), Lalit Tapu (32) and Masuk Jaduk Sureen (27). The bodies were sent to the NMMC hospital for post mortem. The injured were administered first aid. JN Sinnarkar, deputy municipal commissioner (DMC), disaster management of NMMC, said that the heavy rain made it difficult for rescue operations as there were huge stones falling on the rescuers.
“The bodies of two people were removed by early afternoon. However the last body was removed only around 4.30 pm. Around 12 to 14 officials of the disaster management team and several fire brigade personnel were involved in the rescue operation,” added Sinnarkar. “All five workers were doing stone crushing work when the accident took place. The heavy rains seemed to have caused the landslide,” said Suresh Bhosale, senior inspector, Turbhe MIDC police station.
