Traffic violators in the national capital are filling the coffers of Delhi Police with the force collecting a whopping 6.99 crore from them during the first 45 days of this year.

The amount was collected by traffic police from the wrong-doers this year till February 15, thanks to an "intensive challaning" drive launched this month which saw "more vigorous" policemen on the roads. Already around six lakh challans were issued by policemen this year, which showed an increase in action against red light jumping, improper parking and drunken driving, a senior police official said.

"Our emphasis is on quality prosecution and not on quantity. Now the priority is accorded to quality enforcement," the official said. Last year, the official said, police had collected Rs 86.52 crore through traffic challans. Acting tough, police had this year arrested over 7,400 drivers for violating traffic rules besides impounding around 5,000. Total number of challans ran into about 5.5 lakh.

Delhi Police has challaned 1.26 lakh people for violation of traffic rules from February one to 15 during the intensive drive. They include 21,000 cases of red light jumping. About 98,000 motorcycle drivers have been challaned also in last one and half months.
