Dengue has claimed seven lives in Delhi so far. However, in the first of its kind case the widow of a victim took her own life yesterday.

Lata Singh, 23, committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan at her Vishwas Nagar residence in east Delhi on Tuesday, a day after her husband Kapil Gola died of dengue at a city hospital.

Lata's neighbours called the police at around 11 am, after repeated knocks on her door went unanswered. Om Prakash, a neighbour of Lata, had gone to ask for a LPG cylinder and got suspicious when nobody came to unlock the door.

"When I looked through a hole in the window, I saw her hanging from the ceiling. I immediately called the police," said Prakash.

He told MiD DAY that Lata had been very upset since Monday, as her husband died of dengue that day.
The couple were leading a mysterious life, as no relatives used to visit them and even Kapil came to see his wife only twice or thrice in a week.

"They had a mysterious relationship. They were staying in this building since one year and we have never seen any relatives coming to visit them. Kapil had introduced Lata as his wife. They did not maintain an amicable relationship with their neighbours," said Prakash.

Even Lata's sister, Seema Singh, was not aware of her sister's death. It was claimed that Lata, who was already married with two children in Mumbai, had eloped with Kapil a year ago and came to settle in Delhi.
"I didn't have any contact with her for the last eight months. I do not know what her husband did. She didn't share her personal details with us and rarely contact us. We did not even know about Kapil's death," Seema told MiD DAY.

A suicide note found near Lata's body revealed that she was depressed over her husband's death due to dengue and did not blame anybody for the extreme step, a police official said.

Sting Operation

The dengue menace continued in Delhi with the number of patients affected by the vector-borne disease reaching 3,703 on Tuesday.
The city has reported seven dengue deaths this season. A total of 62 fresh cases were recorded on Tuesday. The last time it was below 65 in a day was on September 11 when 64 new cases were detected. For most of the last 10 days, the city had been reporting over 90 cases in a day.
