A decision on the licences of an equal number of medical practitioners is pending with MMC. A representative of the medical council told MiD DAY that a verdict will be reached only after reviewing each case.

The nine doctors whose registrations were suspended include one each from Beed, Solapur, Sangli, Yavatmal, Ahmednagar, Satara and Wardha, and two from Jalgaon. Eight of them have been convicted by sessions court and there licences have been suspended pending the final decision of the appellate court, informed state officials from PCPNDT cell.

“As per information available, there are around 30 more doctors whose registrations are under scrutiny of MMC. We are yet to get details of what the council intends to do in these cases. We will soon be receiving a report of actions taken by MMC in March” said Dr Asaram Khade, state PCPNDT consultant.

Khade added, “While 400 cases were filed against doctors for violating various sections of PCPNDT Act, 302 are pending in court. Charges have been framed against 69 doctors. Eight cases were referred to Ayurvedic Council and seven to Homeopathic Council respectively ”

Speaking to MiD DAY, Dr Jayesh Lele, secretary of Indian Medical Association (Maharashtra) said “We are not against the Act and judiciary, but we have also appealed that there should not be stringent action against the doctors who have been charged of committing minor clerical mistakes. Government should only consider genuine cases.”

“We will let you know after a decision is reached,” said Dr Kishor Taori, president of MMC, refusing to divulge any more details.
