Donkeys married ahead of Valentines Day

Donkeys married ahead of Valentines Day

A pair of donkeys was married at the Legislature House today as a mark of respect for the love the two animals share and to encourage people to celebrate Valentine's Day.

Kannada activist Vatal Nagraj, known for his weird protests, performed the marriage ceremony. The bride donkey Rati and the groom donkey Manmath were decked and brought on a platform in Legislature House. Vatal Nagraj put a green silk saree on Rati and a white pancha on Manmath. Turmeric and vermillion were put on their foreheads. Necklace of coulourful threads were also put around their neck. Garlands were exchanged on their behalf.

Reluctant bride!

When the time to send off the couple came,u00a0Rati was just like a typical Indian bride. Sheu00a0was reluctant to go. A goods auto rickshaw was brought and Manmath got into it. But Rati seemed to have got scared and walked backwards. She was pulled and pushed and put into the auto with her 'husband' Manmath.

Nagraj then felicitated them by touching their feet, joining hands to them and even kissing them. "I bow to their love. Even animals love each other, just like the way we humans do. Love is everywhere and there is nothing wrong in celebrating Valentine's Day," he said.

Vatal also condemned Sri Ram Sene's threat that they will get couples married if they are found together on Valentine's Day. "Tying a 'taali' around the neck of a girl by a boy is sacred. A couple meets many times, gets to know each other, families meet and then decides to get married. Some moral cop cannot simply get any one married," he said.
