A demonstration was staged in the city to protest the state board's decision to delete references to Dadoji Konddev as Shivaji's guru

Yesterday, several pro-Hindutva organisations staged a demonstration to protest against Maharashtra State

Board's decision to delete reference to Dadoji Konddev as "Guru" (mentor) of Maratha king Shivaji from the standard four history textbooks from the next academic year.

Nearly 200 protesters waved black flags to mark their protest over this decision by the textbook board. The decision of the board has also evoked sharp reactions from Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), which had criticised it saying it showed a bias against the Brahmin community. The board edited the text in the book following recommendation of a government appointed committee to consult records of the Shivaji period and verify Dadoji's role in moulding his character at a young age. Setting up of the panel was prompted by a demand from certain Maratha organisations that challenged the long-standing acceptance of Dadoji as Shivaji's teacher and weapons trainer.
