Fake report, real trouble

Businessman cooks up robbery story, police say will book him for that

He thought he would cook up a story of a highway robbery, report that his cash and jewellery were stolen and probably seek relief for the same in terms of insurance or other compensation. But he could not hoodwink police and is now finding himself on the wrong side of the law.

A businessman, Dinesh Mahajan told police that on January 31, he was heading towards Patel Nagar after collecting Rs five lakh cash from his friend. While he was passing through Shankar Road, a motorcycle driven by a guy with a young girl riding pillion overtook his car.

"All of a sudden their bike skidded and both of them fell down. I stopped my car and got down to help them. They asked me for water and before I could react, they sprayed something on my face. I fell unconscious. When I came back to my senses, I found myself in my car and my belonging including cash and gold jewellery I was wearing missing," read the statement that Mahajan had given to the police.

He said that after the incident he had called his maternal uncle who took him to his house as he was still feeling giddy.u00a0 On February1, Dinesh had approached the police and lodged an FIR.

Speaking to MiD-DAY, a senior official said though the FIR was lodged, its content puzzled them as it was quite surprising to hear a young girl and her boyfriend were committing robbery in New Delhi's high security zone. Also, Mahajan's claim that his car was stationed near Talkatora stadium for around five to six hours could not have been true as a car parked for so long in that area would have definitely come to notice of the cops there, the official said.

"Mahajan also had said that he was rendered unconscious at around 6 pm. But we found that a call was made from his mobile phone at around 7:15 pm. How was that possible as he was supposed to be unconscious at that time?

We also checked with the person who had given him Rs five lakh and found statements of both were contradictory. Finally,u00a0 we questioned Mahajan on February 2u00a0 and he accepted that he had cooked up stories and nothing was robbed from him. We will arrest him after registering a case under section 182 of IPC for giving false statement to police," said the police official.

When Biker gang struck

On January 15 a plywood unit owner was robbed of Rs 15 lakh at gunpoint outside a bank by bike-borne robbers. A case of robbery was registered at the Kirti Nagar police station as a weapon was used to carry out the crime, though no one was injured in the incident, commissioner of Delhi Police B K Gupta said. Later in the evening, the SHO of Kirti Nagar was sent to the police lines. "He had failed to solve two house robberies even before this incident. He has been shifted because of dereliction of duty," said DCP (west) V Renganathan.
