Where there is space, Mumbaiites will park, and this situation is no different for the empty space under Elphinstone flyover.
In March, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) had issued a notice in newspapers that strict action will be taken against illegal parking under the flyover. The issue also stated that the contract of the pay and park under the flyover had ended long ago. Two months on, the situation has not changed and cars and private tourist buses continue to dot the stretch.
Now, to stop the parking under this flyover, MSRDC now has plans to fence the flyover. A tender has been flouted for the same. “Then, private bus owners and vehicle owners will be restricted from parking their vehicles here.”
In 2009, the State government passed a resolution that vehicles shouldn’t be parked under flyovers as terrorists were likely to park explosive-laden vehicles over there.
On March 17, MiD Day published the story titled ‘Tow the line: MSRDC to private bus owners’ in which it was stated MSRDC’s order to private bus owners and motorists to clear the space below Elphinstone Road flyover within a week or face action.
A month later, MiD DAY visited the location again only to find that the situation remained unchanged. To add to that, vehicles are parked on either side of the road too. The space under the flyover has become a boarding point for Kalyan and Malvan-bound private buses.
Chief Administration Officer Kalam Patil, MSRDC, said, “It’s true that we had published an advertisement or notice in newspaper that action will be taken against those parking vehicles illegally under the Elphistone Road flyover. We have registered a complaint to the traffic department and also with NM Joshi police station. No action has been taken by the officials from police department.”
