After demanding pending dues for over a decade, five Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) employees got relief from the Supreme Court yesterday as the 124-year-old school sports body was asked to pay its staff 50% of the arrears from 1996 to 2003 as per the fifth pay commission.

MSSA staffers Rajaram Gawde, Jayesh Parmar, Dattatray Tambadkar, Rakesh Gaud, Arjun Mandavkar have been at loggerheads with the association, asking for their dues for the last 12 years.

According to the order, the Supreme court has directed "50% arrears of the fifth pay commission to the paid to the concerned workmen in terms of the impugned order passed by the high court within a period of four weeks."

Tambadkar said he was relieved to see their agitation bearing fruit. "We have waited for so long. This news is a huge relief for us. We have been borrowing money to fight the case against MSSA to get back the money we rightly deserve. We have won half the battle now as a final judgement is still pending. The apex court has directed MSSA to give us 50% (of the R8.5 lakh combined arrears of all five employees).

"We hope MSSA president Fr Jude Rodrigues does not delay our payment," said Tambadkar. However, despite the order, MSSA treasurer Sebastian Fernandes is unsure whether the school body will pay its employees.

"They (MSSA employees) have not given me the verdict. They haven't even informed me about the verdict as yet. We will put the matter before our managing committee and then decide if we have to pay them or no."
