Fitness forward: 10 trends we hope to see more of in 2011 Part 5

The multitasking treadmill
Too much work is no longer an excuse to skip your workout. Thanks to Proform's Trailrunner 4.0 treadmill, you can now send off that important office mail while sweating it out in the gym. Equipped with a 10-inch Android tablet, it lets fitness enthusiasts stay in shape while updating their Twitter or Facebook accounts, send emails or surf the net.

Integrated with iFit Live, it also gives you a lowdown on your workout by mapping progress. The inbuilt speaker helps you run to some funky beats. At $2,999, it's a bit pricey for the features it offers. Perhaps they should throw in a coffee dispensing machine, a back and foot massager and some TLC to justify the price tag!

"Working out is a way of de-stressing. It should be an escape from the world, where you spend time with yourself. Bringing the office to the gym means you give up on quality personal time," says Sanjay Patel, kickboxing and martial arts instructor. "If there's stress at work, you will be stressed out and distracted while working out, which beats the purpose of exercise. A bit of entertainment is okay as it distracts from the tediousness of the task, but I'd strongly recommend shutting off the outside world while on the treadmill."

Taebo
Zareen Watson, Watson Fitness, has introduced a new fitness regime called Tae-Bo. She says, "Tae-Bo is basically a very versatile copyrighted fitness routine. Introduced by Billy Blanks who was a Taek-won-do champion, this routine combines Taek-won-do and boxing, hence the name Tae-Bo. Our routine incorporates fast dance moves and nifty footwork.

It is a more energetic work-out than aerobics. It works the upper body thoroughly by way of boxing exercises and the lower body by way of Taek-won-do moves. Since the routine uses only your own body weight, there are no props necessary. Common exercises incorporated into this hybrid programme are a series of lunges, kicks, boxing moves etc all to peppy music."
