Shivraj Mhetre (22), son of senior Congress leader and former minister of state for home Siddharam Mhetre, and his four friends were thrashed by a furious mob on the Pashan-Sus road yesterday morning after a car with his friends in it knocked down a 65-year-old woman.

Bystanders said Shivraj's friend was drunk and speeding when the car hit the woman, who died on the spot. The deceased was identified as Leelavati Tukaram Shingare.

"There are eyewitnesses, like a bus driver, who have identified the car driver, Unmesh Shyam Chavan (23), a resident of Ganeshkhind Road," said Tele.

Besides Shivraj and Unmesh, the others in the car were Priyank Pagar, Harish Ambadas Survase (23) of Solapur, and Swapnil Praveen Kota (21), a resident of Mayur Colony.

All five had to face the fury of the mob before the police intervened and took them to the police station.
"Medical tests were conducted on all five, but only Chavan was found to be drunk," said Tele. "The owner of the car is yet to be identified."

Police story
The police said Chavan, Kota and Survase were in the car and it was speeding towards Chatushrungi from Sus road around 6 am. They said the car knocked down Shingare, who was walking on the road with her grandchild, and rammed into a school bus.

The police said residents from nearby began gathering at the spot and started beating the three occupants of the car, which is when Survase called Pagar, who brought Mhetre along.

"The five of them are close friends since five to six years. Except Unmesh, all others are studying in Symbiosis College," said Tele. "They were at Pagar's residence on Monday night for dinner. They went to Hotel Mont Vert near Sus road to watch the football match, and were returning from there when the incident took place."

The Chatushrungi police lodged a case against Chavan. Shingare's son Dnyaneshwar filed the complaint.
"Chavan will be arrested soon," Tele said.
