Mayor promises compensation for joint destroyed in blast, but says no rebuilding of part on 'encroached' land

Au00a0month has passed since the Valentine's Day eve blast that reduced German Bakery to rubble, but the family that owns the popular Koregaon Park joint is still waiting for compensation.

Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal has promised compensation for the destroyed bakery, but says no permission will be given to rebuild the part that stood on encroached land.

Every year for many years, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been sending a notice to the German Bakery, asking it to give up land it said the eatery had encroached on. But the PMC could not do much more as the matter was in court.

Staff upset
Snehal Kharose, the daughter of German Bakery owner Smita Kharose, said the staff at the bakery was upset and ready to go home to Nepal as nobody had come forward to give compensation to rebuild the bakery. "One month has already passed and it is difficult to support 30 members of the staff from our pockets. We request the government to grant us compensation," said Snehal.

Debris not cleared
The Kharose family said they had received oral communication from the ACP of the Crime Branch on clearing the debris but there had been no written permission from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) yet, and without written communication they would not start on the clearing work.

Snehal said, "The Bund Garden police station has asked the Zilla Parishad to make available a place where the remains of the bakery can be preserved for investigation. As the said premises are not available, the process
is delayed."

Police Inspector Sudhakar Kate of the Bund Garden police station refused to comment on the issue, only saying, "The ATS is investigating."

Mayor Mohan Singh Rajpal said, "We will announce compensation to build the bakery very soon. We have already updated Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar on this matter.

The exact compensation amount will be announced after the discussion with Pawar. But no permission will be given to rebuild on the encroached part."
