Indian hockey great Eliza Nelson bid an emotional adieu to her Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) heritage building office after 39 years of service with the Indian Railways as a senior sports officer yesterday. The 60-year-old said that it has been a roller coaster ride for her both personally and professionally and will take a break before she decides what to do next.

Talking about her grand farewell, the Padma Shree awardee said, “I never expected such an extravagant farewell. When I entered the building, all the girls from the Western Railway and Central Railway gave me a rousing welcome. They made an arch with hockey sticks and made me walk through, up to my office. The whole day has been a walk down memory lane. I thought there would be a small function when I step out, but so much love was showered on me that has made me feel that I have done something good.”

When asked about the highs and lows of her tenure as a sports administrator and a sportsperson, Nelson, who was part of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, said, “I enjoyed every bit of my time as a sportsperson. Being a sports administrator has its own responsibility. You take care of 400 athletes and monitor their performances, promotions, and increments.”
