The court said 'Karavali Ale' editor-in-chief C Vu00a0Seetharam's detention was illegal. The court also said that the police issued a warrant against him with mala fide intention.
On January 4, the police arrested Seetaram, near Karkala in Udupi district. He was on his way from Kateel in Dakshina Kannada district to Kundapur (in Udupi district).
Seetaram alleged that when his car was nearing Karkala, nearly five or six police vans stopped him. He was surrounded by nearly 25 policemen and was told that he was being arrested in connection with a defamation case filed two years ago.
He claimed that when he demanded an arrest warrant, the police sent a policeman to the police station to fetch it and made him and his wife wait for over an hour.
Seetaram had also alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government was targeting him because of the paper's criticism of the government.
