Pravin Mahajan's wife Sarangi approaches State Human Rights Commission alleging her husband's death was caused by medical negligence in prison

Pravin Mahajan's death has triggered off a new controversy with his wife Sarangi alleging that he died because of apathy of the jail administration.

The matter came to the fore last week when Sarangi complained to the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), Mumbai, requesting a fresh inquiry into circumstances which led to Pravin's death 10 months ago.

Sarangi Mahajan, widow of Pravin Mahajan who died on March 3, 2010, wants a fresh inquiry into circumstances which led to her husband's death

She pleaded that appropriate action should be taken against the negligent officials.

The Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Thane wrote a letter (copy available with MiD DAY) to Sarangi on November 11, 2010, asking her to be present in his office on December 3, 2010. He has instituted an inquiry into Pravin Mahajan's death.

Sarangi in her statement (copy available with MiD DAY) to the Magistrate stated that her husband Pravin Mahajan was admitted to Sahyog Hospital in Thane on December 11, 2009. He was later shifted to Jupiter Hospital wherein valuable time was lost.

Pravin died on March 3, 2010, almost three months after he was declared ill by the jail authorities.

Sarangi has written in her statement that her husband was suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes since December 1994 and was under constant medication.

He was arrested for the alleged murder of his elder brother, BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, on April 22, 2006, and was in police custody till May 3, 2006.

During this period, the police station concerned was informed about his ailments. He was under medication there and was taken to J J hospital, as and when required.

Pravin was in judicial custody from May 3, 2006, to December 18, 2007. He was convicted on December 18, 2007, and was shifted to Nashik Central Jail.

He was later released on parole on November 27, 2009, for 15 days and was expected to surrender on December 12, 2009.

He collapsed on December 11, 2009 at 8.45 pm and was admitted to a hospital.

Sarangi alleged that during this period, the Superintendent / Jailor of Nashik and Arthur Road jails were intimated about his ailments, but he was totally negleted and no proper treatment was given to him.

On several occasions, Pravin had requested for proper medication or to be shifted to a hospital but the officials did not pay heed to his requests.

Sarangi had also requested jail officials to ensure that her husband be administered proper treatment. She alleged that her requests fell on deaf ears.

Sarangi told MiD DAY that she has forwarded statements to the Magistrate and also SHRC seeking appropriate action in the case.

Swati Sathe was the superintendent when Pravin was in Arthur Road jail and co-incidentally later, when Pravin was shifted to Nashik jail, Sathe was also transferred to Nashik jail at that time.

Despite several attempts, Sathe was not available for comment. She did not respond to SMSes sent on her mobile phone.
