Students to devise plans for restoring the Mughal era grandeur of the market in a national competition

Young, innovative minds and the old world charm of Chandni Chowk can be a potent combination.

High school students will tackle the problems being faced by the Mughal era bazaar under the Future Cities India 2020, a national-level competition. The contest has been organised by the Department of Science and Technology under the Union Human Resource Development ministry that focuses on the use of science and technology development process to solve real world challenges incorporating real world data and using globally recognised professional software.

"Redevelopment of Chandni Chowk" is the topic for this year.

Students will be challenged to devise plans to renovate the market, which is in shambles due to human and vehicular congestion, keeping in mind the concerns of the surrounding historical infrastructure and the plan has to be environmentally sustainable. Teachers and industry mentors will guide each team in designing a plan. A distinguished panel of judges will evaluate the entries and the results will be announced by February next year.

There are 34 schools and 43 teams participating in the event this year. Out of these 15 teams will contest for the final round. Some of the schools from Delhi and NCR are Amity International, Vasundhara, Apeejay School, Sheikh Sarai, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Tagore Garden, Ryan International, Noida among others.

Anuradha Sharma, principal of Ryan International, Noida, said: "By exposing young minds to engineering and design, we are grooming the next generation of infrastructure professionals, and giving them an opportunity to contribute to society. We are delighted to be a part of this wonderful programme. Hope this year our school emerges out as the winner."

Last year the competition consisted of 15 teams representing 14 high schools and the challenge centered on Indian Railway's plans to refurbish the country's ageing railway stations.

Student teams submitted conceptual designs for the rehabilitation of the New Delhi railway station, the first of 22 stations on the redevelopment schedule.

The winners are awarded scholarships and trophies.

The programme is inspired by and working in cooperation with National Engineers Week Future City Competition in the United States.
