As Fergusson College completes 125 glorious years, former principal Dr V M Bachal charts the history of the institution

The 125-year-old history of Fergusson College is not onlyu00a0 confined to the educational growth of the region but also mirrors the change in the socio-political trends of the state. Hence, Dr V M Bachal, former principal of college, is writing the history of the institution in three volumes, which will be released in the celebration year between January 2009 and 2010.

Bachal joined Fergusson College in 1950 as a student. And his association with the college continued till he became its principal in 1993. "I am trying to highlight this unique educational institute which has given a galaxy of great people to the country," he said. He added that his work will be the first of its kind and will be published by the Blue Bird Publication.

Bachal informed, "The college got its name from James Fergusson who was an educationalist and the then governor of Mumbai province." Titled Vatchal Savvashe Varshanchi, the first part of the book will have the history of the institute from 1885 to 1935 along with a special feature on the first girl student Krishnabai Kelavkar.

Having received five stars by the University Grant Commission (UGC) three years ago, Fergusson College is amongst the top 10 colleges in India. It had also played host to many freedom fighters during the pre-independent era.u00a0

Besides, it has a celebrated list of alumni that includes Gopal Krishna Gokhale, former prime ministers V P Singh and P V Narasimha Rao and actresses like Smita Patil and Sonali Kulkarni.

Opening on January 2 by the hands of Ramraje Nimbalkar, state minister of water resources and B G Shirke, renowned industrialist and alumni of the college.
