India came from behind to beat Bangladesh 5-1 for their fifth consecutive win in the Hockey World League Round 2 and move into the third round of the league at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here yesterday.
Danish Mujtaba (14th, 64th) scored a brace while Rupinder Pal Singh (32nd), Akashdeep Singh (50th) and Malak Singh (58th) scored a goal apiece. Mamamur Rahman struck the solitary goal for Bangladesh in the fifth minute.
Besides India, Ireland, who finished second with a 4-0 win over China, also made it to the third round of the World League, which is a qualifying tournament for the 2014 World Cup in the Hague. India finished with 15 points and Ireland 12.
Eves qualify too
A solitary strike by Rani Rampal helped India beat Russia 1-0 in their last league game and qualify for the third round by finishing on top of the women’s Hockey World League Round 2 at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium yesterday.
Coming into the last day after Japan had beaten Malaysia 4-0 to book their berth in the next round, India needed just a draw against Russia but a moment of brilliance from Rani got India a win. — IANS
