City police is roping in the Home Guards to ensure pedestrian safety and accident-free roads in and around the city. Proactive: Shankar Bidari
Police commissioner Shankar Mahadev Bidari said the Home Guards would be deployed at busy junctions, commercial areas and school zones to help pedestrians cross roads.
Help at hand
They will also encourage bus drivers and pedestrians to use the facilities at underpass bus bays and footbridges. There will be special emphasis on areas with a high concentration of senior citizens.
Earlier, the city police had taken the services of Home Guards at traffic junctions. But due to the increase in vehicles and pedestrians, we have decided to increase their numbers, Bidari said. To begin with, 200 home guards will be employed and the number increased gradually.
In demand
The Home Guards are in demand in other government departments as well. The transport department uses the services of around 100 personnel to serve notices on tax defaulters.
Officers in the fire and emergency services are also happy that the Home Guards are finally getting due recognition. They are trained on par with any force and can handle any eventuality, said a senior officer.
