Farooq Mapkar, accused in the 1993 Hari Masjid rioting case, returned home with a smile when he first came to know that he has been acquitted by the Sessions Court from the case.

When Mid DAY contacted Mapkar over the phone, he said, "My wife and parents don't know that I have been acquitted. I will surprise them with the news."


Mapkar was acquitted after the court observed that the prosecution had failed to prove its case. He also demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter which was accepted after much hesitation.


"We will have a meeting with the CBI who have already visited Hari Masjid and made note of it. Till now I was an accused, but now, after being acquitted I hope things will improve," he added.

Seven persons were killed inside Hari Masjid in Wadala when police opened fire on January 10, 1993. Mapkar was inside the mosqueu00a0when the firing took place, allegedly on the orders of police inspector Nikhil Kapse. He added that now that he's been acquitted, he would again visit Hari Masjid to seek blessings.
