The incessant showers that pounded the city over the weekend have set a new record for this year's monsoon. As per the data gathered by the India Meteorological Department, in the 24 hours beginning from 8.30 am last Saturday, Santacruz recorded 220.4 mm of rainfall, the highest for this year.

In fact, in the month of August in the last 10 years, the rainfall the city measured on August 27-28 in 2011 is second only to that received in 2006 (see box), surpassing the 210 mm that Colaba received on July 31 last month, which had been the highest for this season until Saturday.

"Yesterday's rain has broken the record of this monsoon. The highest until then was witnessed on July 31. But Saturday's rain broke the earlier record," said an IMD official. Weathermen said that Sunday also received a good amount of rainfall. Between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, Colaba received 135 mm of rain.

Heavy showers ahead
Warning of heavy showers, the official added, "Continuous rains would occur in parts of the city and the suburbs. Heavy to very heavy rain, accompanied by strong gusty winds, is likely in some areas."

Citing the reason for the heavy downpour, he said that a low-pressure area has been building over the state, leading to the rains. Also, an upper-air cyclonic circulation over Orissa and its neighbouring states has strengthened the westerly winds that blow from high-pressure areas to the poles in the mid-tropospheric levels. Consequently, widespread rains have hit Maharashtra.

VK Rajeev, director, IMD Mumbai confirmed that the weather is unlikely to relent. "The situation will prevail till tomorrow, as the westerly winds have strengthened." The figures presented by the IMD show that in the last 10 years, August 28, 2011 has received the second highest amount of rainfall, after August 7, 2006, when the rainfall recorded was 224.2 mm.
