A 32-year-old former journalist, who was working as an assistant manager with Infosys, hanged herself in her apartment yesterday unable to bear the alleged harassment by her husband.

The Hennur police have arrested her husband, Rohit Ananthakrishna a software engineer with Google, in connection with the case.

Smitha Rao, the deceased, committed suicide at her residence in Mantri Splendor apartment in Geddalahalli on Hennur Road yesterday morning.

Rao had worked with the Times of India and Bangalore Mirror for quite sometime before joining Infosys as an assistant manager in June 2010. She was handling online content for the company's website.

According to the police, the couple got married in 2007 and had problems between them since the beginning. Even yesterday they had allegedly fought over an issue and Ananthakrishna left for work.

The police said that at around 9.30 am Rao called him and reportedly told him that it was her last call and he would never meet her again and disconnected the call.

Worried over the phone call, Ananthakrishna rushed home from his office at Old Madras Road and found Smitha hanging from the ceiling with the help of a lungi.

A police officer on condition of anonymity, said, "Rohit called an ambulance and rushed her to Columbia Asia Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

Her parents, who stay at Shankaranagar in Mahalakshmi Layout, said that Rohit's harassment had led to their daughter's death. Based on that we have arrested him."
