It's all kid stuff

If you (or your six-year-old) have always wanted to ask, "May I have a Malini Ramani for the lil one, please?" Then new kid's clothing store, Kidology, is worth a look

We grasped the urban parents' growing fixation for dressing up their kids in designer wear when we walked into Masaba Gupta's eponymous store a few months back and chanced upon a pricey range for kids stacked in a corner. Soon, Mal opened up in a Juhu gully, with a boudoir-like feel and labels like Anupama Dayal and Raghavendra Rathore (ooh, the bandhgalas).

We were wondering how mammas could afford a frilly frock for Rs 3,000, especially since kids grow out of their clothes so soon, when yet another entrant made us think that it does make good business sense, after all. There are enough society ladies out there, anyway.

You can customise this net-and-brocade dress
(Rs 4,980 for the set)

Kidology, nestled in a homely lane off Carter Road in Bandra, is divided into two sections by the sweetest trial room we have ever seen -- you draw a curtain to find yourself ensconced in a round makeshift room inlaid with fairy lights. Equally aww-inspiring are the many lamps strung from the ceiling that have sketches by children on the surface. We almost picked up a chalk to scribble on a partition-cum-blackboard that allows kids to run amok with their colours as the in-house designer takes measurements. We like.

The Kidology section of the store stocks labels like Gaurav Gupta (check out his baba suits for new-borns), Gauri & Nainika (their uber-cute polka-dotted frocks even come with matching bloomers), Malini Ramani (can we get that cotton lycra dress in our size, please?), Namrata Joshipura (love her patch-worked flowers on frocks) and Ritu Kumar (a couple of cute lehenga-cholis). Labels, however, don't come cheap and that's obvious on the price tag for everything, from a mere hair band (Rs 490) to teeny purses (for Rs 1,890) and dresses, most of which are priced above Rs 2,000.

The kids' graffiti on the divider-cum-blackboard at Kidology
elicits a spontaneous 'Aww'

When we were kids, we loved to dress identically with our best friend or sister. Seems like the kids of today, however, prefer their clothes bespoke. Step over to Mignon, the other section headed by Meghna Miglani, who does solely customised kids wear. Don't expect a lot of cottons -- but there's plenty of semi-formal dresses in satin, organza and velvet dresses for tea parties (the latter bordering slightly on the hideous) and floral gowns that will put the sunshine in your summer.

Browse through sample pieces stocked here, choose one, discuss the features you would like Meghna to modify and pick up your dress in a fortnight. Though the price tags still pinch, Meghna promises to work within budget limits too. While fussy little girls will have a lot to smile about, there's barely anything here for little men, save a few uninspiring pieces. Coming up soon: more stuff for boys and a maternity line.
