Standing Committee to now take up proposals kept on hold during election; formation of new civic house on March 10
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election results were declared yesterday, but the newly elected corporators will have to wait till March 10 to step into the BMC headquarters. Till the formation of the new house, the sitting corporators will carry on with the pending business in the civic body.

The last two Standing Committee meetings were adjourned as very few members turned up as several corporators were busy with the election campaign at the time. As a result, most of the proposals that were to come up in the meetings had to be kept in abeyance.
The next meeting is to be held today, when a proposal for the works done for the conduct of the election is scheduled to come up for clearance.
"The proposal was there in the agenda of the last meeting held on February 6 but due to insufficient number of members, it has been carried forward for the meeting tomorrow (Saturday)," said an official from the municipal secretary's department yesterday.
Worth over Rs 18.83 crore, the proposal is for election-related works that included setting up of pandals and things used by local decorators for the electrical set-up.
It also involves the logistics of 980 open pandals, 1,764 half-closed pandals, 5,631 booths in buildings and 29 on the first-floor of buildings. Around 29 kinds of materials were required in vast quantities and there is also the payment of 45 decorators who took up the work.
Besides the poll-related proposal, there are also proposals worth Rs 90 lakh to set up electrical panels and fire extinguishers at Nair and Sion hospitals.
Also, to deal with leakages in the water pipelines, the civic body will be setting up CCTV cameras that will show engineers where the problems with the underground lines are.
A contract worth Rs 51.48 lakh will be given for supplying as well as setting up the cameras.
"There is also a proposal for paying a contractor around Rs 50 lakh for replacing the lights which are set up at Bhandup Complex under the water projects. The lights set up for the project there are 30 years old and have become rusty. Even the parts are not available in the market for replacement," said an official from the civic body.
There is a major proposal for providing medicines to the BMC-run hospitals and dispensaries and it is estimated to be worth Rs 45.45 crore.
The medicines are to be provided for 2012-2013 and will be supplied by 23 pharmaceutical companies.
"No major projects will be cleared till April as everyone will be quite busy with the new budget and the other changes as the new corporators take over," a senior official said. "Routine proposals will be taken up for works that can not be kept on hold."
