Pregnant woman among dead in bike-truck accident; residents say their suggestions for safety ignored

Au00a0speeding truck on Pune-Solapur road killed three people, including a pregnant woman. The accident happened at 12.50 am yesterday. Including the three casualties, November alone has seen seven deaths in different accidents that took place in the area between Ravidarshan Society and the toll post near Loni on Pune-Solapur Road. Residents of Ravidarshan society and areas near its vicinity say that their suggestion to the Mayor to find ways to do away with the congestion on the road due to the nearby Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS)u00a0 have fallen on deaf ears.

The accident happened near Ravidarshan society, near the Hadapsar BRTS route. The speeding truck hit the motorbike from behind. The impact of the crash was severe and Vandana Kakade (30), the pillion rider fell on the road and was mowed down by the truck. Her six-year-old son Tanmay fell some feet away from her. Swaroop Kakade (30) and Tanmay were seriously injured.

Senior Police Inspector of Hadapsar police station Pandharinath Mandhare said, "The police patrolling vehicle noticed a crowd near Ravidarshan building. On reaching the spot, we saw three people lying motionless in the pool of blood. The lady was pregnant and her foetus was lying aside. We immediately covered her body and called the ambulance. The three were taken to Noble hospital for treatment. While she was declared dead on admission the other two were under treatment. But at 3:30 am the doctors informed us about their death."

The bodies were sent for post mortem at Command hospital and were handed over to their relatives in the morning. Dayanand Madhukar Oval (22), the truck driver was arrested immediately and was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

Hadapsar residents have had constant problems with the BRTS route occupying major portion of the road. This year has seen a loss of 31 lives due to accidents on this stretch.u00a0

Residents flay BRTS
The angry residents in the area had gheraoed Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal when the latter had come to lay the foundation stone of an internal road in Priyadarshini society, close to the BRTS stretch on Tuesday.

The residents had demanded the removal of the barricades separating BRTS route from the rest of the road since according to them, only 10 per cent vehicles pass from the route meant for BRTS occupying 2/3 rd part of the road leaving behind a tiny portion for a large amount of traffic. They also complained that the vehicles passing through the BRTS route were being driven at high-speed levels resulting into fatal accidents in the area.
