Kiran Bedi never does anything without a reason. After attempting to clean up the Indian judicial system, she is now trying to clean up our nation. 
Well literally. Her latest book Broom and Groom with Pavan Choudary seeks to drill some civic sense into us Indians and make us a well-groomed nation. She speaks to CS about how we can clean up our act:
Coming out clean
Even though we have fines for littering, spitting, what have you, we fail miserably when in comes to their enforcement. And in a country that is as cop-deficient as ours, that's always been a problem. I think it would be a great idea to authorise citizen cops.
They could be college students who are given a uniform and the right to identify trespassers. Naming and shaming does help. When these trespassers are made to languish in jail for a few hours, they'll learn their lesson. But more importantly, it is these civic cops who will learn self-discipline, ensuring that the young generation at least makes a difference. This will serve more purpose than just the health and hygiene issues.
Mind your manners
I think parents and teachers have a big role to play in inculcating a sense of hygiene and manners in our children. A child speaks the language of a parent, so it is us adults who need to lead by example. The school curriculum should also give more weightage to grooming, health and hygiene.
It is very unfortunate that we as a country are lacking in basic manners. We talk loudly on the phone in public places, wipe our shoes with the sheets in the hotel rooms, strike a fight with our spouse in front of our guests, speak disrespectfully to our house helps, don't think twice before abusing the driver on the roadu00a0-- and then we call ourselves educated.
This book is just a step towards truly educating ourselves so that we have no qualms picking up a broom and making a few alterations in our lifestyles so that we appear groomed as we step out into the world.
