Kolkata is a repository of intrigue. Once, the second city of the British empire, it was also the centre of resistance against colonial rule. Once home to the rich and powerful, it also became the abode of the poorest and the homeless. And through all this, through its twists and turns, through ups and downs, it had housed and nurtured artists. And through their work, one gets to know the different aspects of the city apart from being exposed to an important phase of art itself.

For the art lover in search of such works, a collection 300 paintings by 100 artists depicting Kolkata will be up for an exhibition, The Bengal Train at The Art Hub in Worli. The paintings in the collection depict typical aspects of Kolkata, be it iconic monuments and buildings, street scenes, daily life, its people, history or culture through line-drawings, charcoal works, watercolors, sculpture, prints and graphic art.

"Kolkata Art, as it's widely called, is peculiar. We all love Kolkata Art and its artists because they are a delight to our eyes. The Art Hub wanted to bring the same magic and aura to Mumbai. We are going to create a mini Kolkata with the works of several masters and contemporary artists," says Ravindra Mardia, founder The Art Hub. Works of celebrated artists like Jogen Chaudary, Nirmalendu Das, Subhaaprasanna, Shipra Bhattacharya, Sudipto Roy, Suhas Roy and Gagaenendra Nath Tagore will be on display.
