Hamilton crossed the line 6.9 seconds ahead of Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo after seizing the lead from pole-sitter Rosberg at the start and then driving unchallenged to the flag with a flawless lights-to-flag display of dominance.

Ricciardo's podium was his second consecutive rostrum result and came as he marked his 100th GP start. He was followed home by team-mate Max Verstappen who handed Red Bull their first double-podium finish in over a year.

Rosberg, who had looked unbeatable heading into Sunday's race after topping every session of the weekend, was only fourth.

The German lost ground not just to Hamilton but also both Red Bulls at the start and collected a five-second penalty for running Verstappen off the track as he sought to battle back up the field.

Sunday's win was Hamilton's sixth from the last seven races and fourth in the row. He now leads Rosberg by 19 points in the drivers' championship standings, having jumped to the top for the first time all year only a week ago in Hungary.

It was also the Briton's 49th career win, just two short of French legend Alain Prost's mark of 51 who is second in the all-time winners stakes.

Sebastian Vettel was fifth on his first appearance in Ferrari colours on home soil, ahead of Kimi Raikkonen who capped a disappointing weekend for the team that saw Red Bull overhauled them for second in the constructors' standings.

Formula One now breaks for its annual four-week summer holiday. The circus will reconvene for the Belgian GP at the end of August. Hamilton, who holds a crucial psychological edge over Rosberg heading into the second half of the season, wished every one happy holidays.

"I hope everyone has an amazing holiday. I'm going to have one. I'll be on a beach, in the sunshine with a pina colada," said the Mercedes ace shortly after his dominant win.
