Red Pepper is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it restaurant on the curve of the Juhu-Versova Link Road. This very basic restaurant that offers a few tables in its cramped space is more a take away joint than a sit-down.

Bhuna Gosht

In the restaurant's defence, they've utilised the space quite nicely and have actually lit it up very well, to give it a slightly classy feel. Of course, there is only so much that lighting can do.

Red Pepper is your typical Mughlai restaurant that also offers Indian Chinese. The owners insist that Indian food is their specialty.

Taking their word for it, we start with the Paneer Tikka (Rs 100). Soft, juicy chunks of paneer marinated in tandoori masala was served to us very promptly and came grilled to perfection. In a bid to add their touch, it was sprinkled with Chaat Masala.

The flavour however, was a bit bland and the cottage cheese, slightly sour. The Dal Makhni (Rs 90) was cooked with generous portions of cream and butter. We could not stop licking our fingers on this one and this dish alone, has earned Red Pepper the extra point for the food; it was the perfect combination of ginger, garlic and garam masala, if there ever was one.

The Bhuna Gosht (Rs 160) arrived, floating in oil, and enough to fuel a tiny nation. This was combined with a tangy masala base that included onions, tomatoes yogurt, plenty (and I mean this in the nicest way) chili powder, salt, jeera, garam masala, ginger and garlic paste.

I'm not sure that it's a good thing, that I could distinctly identify all of these distinct flavours in the oil and not taste the real meat . Disappointment!

Lastly, the Chicken Lahori (Rs130) was served as competition to the oily Bhuna Gosht. This one too, came in it's own bed of oil mixed with yoghurt and fried onion. A one-way ticket to cholesterol hell.
