United Nations has created the collection for the International Day of Happiness today; A R Rahman, Ed Sheeran, James Blunt, and others have nominated songs that make them happy
Today, on the International Day of Happiness, you get to cheer yourself up and feel good thanks to a playlist of songs created by the United Nations (UN) in collaboration with top artistes from around the world.
Happy to help: A R Rahman is part of the campaign launched by the UN
UN is creating the ‘World’s Happiest Playlist’ and has roped in top musicians and other personalities, to show solidarity with the millions suffering around the world.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the world body is “using the universal language of music to show solidarity with the millions of people around the world suffering from poverty, human rights abuses, humanitarian crises and the effects of environmental degradation and climate change.”
Established in 2012 by the UN General Assembly and celebrated from the next year, the International Day of Happiness recognises that the “pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal.”
The #HappySoundsLike campaign is led by Cody Simpson, a musician from Texas and has a host of big names from the music industry. The artistes have nominated songs that rouse happy emotions in them (see box).
From India, maestro A R Rahman will be a part of the campaign along with British singer-songwriter James Blunt and Ed Sheeran, among others. Actors Charlize Theron and Michael Douglas, along with UN Messengers of Peace and Goodwill Ambassadors have also been enlisted.
Music fans can also nominate their choice of songs by tweeting with the hashtag #HappySoundsLike. Simpson will choose five songs from fan nominations to be included in the official playlist today. UN has tied up with music streaming service MixRadio for the campaign.
The pursuit of happiness is serious business. Happiness for the entire human family is one of the main goals of the United Nations. Peace, prosperity, lives of dignity for all – this is what we seek.
We want all men, women and children to enjoy all their human rights. We want all countries to know the pleasure of peace. We want people and planet alike to be blessed with sustainable development, and to be spared the catastrophic impacts of climate change. Let us give thanks for what makes us happy. And let us dedicate our efforts to filling our world with happiness.
— Ban Ki-moon
