A case of rash and negligent driving, wherein a mother-son duo could have easily walked away with a meagre police warning took an ugly turn after the son abused the police constable who asked the woman for her driving licence.

Besides being abused, the cop lost his gold ring while trying to prevent the man from being roughed up by the onlookers, with whom he started arguing after the mishap. Smita Jayesh Thakkar (55) rammed her Maruti Suzuki Swift into a divider on Thursday afternoon while she was learning to drive.

The incident occurred on Mathuradas Road in Kandivli (West), while her 25-year-old son was training her. Soon after Thakkar rammed her car into the divider, passers-by rushed to her aid. Upon realising that it was a minor mishap and that Thakkar was learning to drive, they asked her to take formal training.
It was here that constable Ajabrao Patil (55), who was passing by, stepped in and brought the situation under control. However while preventing the angry crowd from bashing Thakkar’s son, he lost his wedding ring. Patil said, “When I asked the lady for her driving licence, her son started abusing me.
This is when I decided to take them in custody and register a complaint for abusing an on-duty policeman. Moreover, I lost my wedding ring at a time I was trying to prevent the angry crowd from manhandling the son.” An officer from Kandivli police station said, “We arrested and booked Thakkar for rash driving and confiscated her car. She was later released on a bail of Rs 5,000.”
