A 16-year old boy allegedly committed suicide after he failed to get desired result in Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam. The incident occurred on Monday night, after the SSC result was declared online in the afternoon. Abhijeet Bansode who scored 45% in SSC hanged himself with a 'dupatta' at his residence in Kurla.

On Monday noon, Abhijeet and his mother Bharati Bansode (35) checked his result online at their residence in Patra Chawl in Sabale Nagar locality in Kurla. According to his mother after checking the result, Abhijeet went out with his friends and came back in the evening as usual. “He was normal watched TV. Even after checking the result when he told that he is pass, he did not seem sad,” said Bharati who further recalled, “When he returned home at around 7pm I went out to grocery shop. When I came back I did not see him at home. It never even crossed my head that he would take such a drastic step. I just thought he must have gone out again. It was after two hours that I started searching for him and when I would not find him anywhere outside house I looked at the mezzanine floor.” Bharati sobbingly continued, “His father and brothers have gone to our native village in only to get caste certificate of his name hoping for some advantage in his college admission. Who knew he would take such a step.”
While the boy’s mother expressed how he did not show any disappointment after the result, Abhijeet’s friends from the chawl where he lived shared his sorrow. "When we met on in the evening on Monday, Abhijeet was talking about how his score is so low and with that he will not be able to take admission to any college," told one of his friends Amol Bhanase (18). The body of Deceased was sent to Rajawadi Hospital in Vidyavihar for post-mortem and Nehru Nagar Police Station has registered a case under section 174 of CrPC in Nehru Nagar police station, Kurla.
Pramod Khoparde, senior police inspector at the Nehru Nagar police station, said, "It is a clear cut suicide case. The deceased was depressed due to his low score in SSC exam so he hanged himself and died. By the time we reached there he was already dead so we removed his body from the knot and sent to Rajawadi hospital for post-mortem.” Medical officer at the Rajawadi Hospital, told midday, "The body was brought dead in the mortuary and we found dark ligature mark on his neck which state that this death was caused due to hanging."
Meanwhile, as the board exam results are declared stress levels have risen among students. Stress helpline numbers are getting several calls. The natures of calls vary from technical help, career guidance to how to deal with stress. Paras Sharma, Program co-coordinator at the I-call helpline centre, said, “On the first day of the result we have received over 100 calls from students. These calls were of varied nature. While some students wanted to know technical information such as process for reevaluation, date for reexamination etc. some others wanted to know what higher education options do they have now since their result is lesser than what they expected it to be. Few calls were also regarding dealing with stress.”
