Mumbai: BMC cuts water cuts

A day after mid-day reported about BMC’s decision to rollback the water cut imposed on the city since last year’s drought, the civic body yesterday revoked the 20 per cent water cut for residential areas and 50 per cent for commercial hubs with immediate effect.

The decision was taken after comparing the current water stock with the average for the last decade. The figures revealed that this year the collective water stock is 64 per cent higher. So the decision to revoke the water cut was taken immediately instead of awaiting a review in October. Moreover, with two more months of monsoon still remaining, lakes supplying water to the city have already accumulated 54 per cent of water.

Speaking to mid-day, Ramesh Bambale, deputy municipal commissioner (special engineering), said, “The IMD has predicted a good rainfall in Mumbai during August and September. It was one of the reasons for revoking the water cut. Water stock will only increase in these two months.”
