The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Saturday Dossier

The thangka way of life
With all the recent tension between India and China, this might make China frown further. Friends of Tibet Foundation have an open invitation for a special documentary, Blue Buddha: Lost Secrets of Tibetan Medicine by David Suzuki on August 8 that will be screened at the School of Design (IDC) inside IIT Powai.

The film will presented by Dr Dorjee Rapten Neshar of Men-Tsee-Khang, the Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute of HH the Dalai Lama. The documentary aims to explain Tibet's comprehensive though still enigmatic medical system. It acquaints the viewer with its traditional medical wisdom that has been preserved in a series of paintings called thangkas. That’s what we call a novel way to learn about medicine.

Selfie with the icon

Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus, Tata & Sons, seems to be oblige for a selfie with a guest at the launch of a new business initiative by the Taj Group of Hotels in the city last evening.

A page turner on Ashatai
After writing Lata Mangeshkar’s biography, senior film journalist, Raju Bharatan now pens one on her equally famous sister, Asha Bhosle.

The career study titled, Asha Bhosle, A Music Journey (Hay House) looks at every aspect of the iconic singer’s life — from the silken rivalry with her elder sister, to her move from OP Nayyar to SD Burman to RD Burman, and her life and times with a galaxy of composers, and eventually reaching the top on her own merit.

We’ve just got our hands on this one, and look forward to soaking in all the the filmi nostalgia, one tune at a time.

Star power for animal rights
When the famous lend their name to a cause, it means more muscle. A starry line-up including John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez, Arjun Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Dr Kiran Bedi, Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane signed People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India’s new petition calling on the government to strengthen animal-protection laws.

Activists call the country’s animal protection laws a “national embarrassment” and “outdated.” Buttressing their arguments they speak about penalties like Rs 50 for convicted first offenders who abuse or even kill an animal as we saw in the case of a medical student who was let off easily.

The petition calls on the government to ensure that people who abuse animals serve jail time, pay significant fines, receive psychological counselling, and are banned from interacting with animals.

Play spoiler and win, too!
A publishing house has come up with a novel way to grab eyeballs. Using a #SpoilerSubra tag, you can spoil something without using the name of the book, movie or TV show. Free Books, mugs and T-shirts are up for grabs. All of yesterday, the Twitter universe seemed to have a blast going into overdrive with it. This diarist sat back and enjoyed the tweet riot.

Pav (er) packed war
The humble pav is having a grand run going by curious twists and takes that some of the city’s top eateries are offering in what’s becoming an engaging pillowy-pav fight.

While The Bombay Canteen glamourised the laadi, now The Bar Stock Exchange (TBSE) in Lower Parel in association with Pack-a-Pav (which started as a pop-up that debuted at the Tapped Craft Beer Festival in November) has joined in.

Their menu will feature fun Pav sandwiches including The Mutton Shammi Pav, Irani Chicken Pav, Mum’s Chicken Garnished Salli Pav and the Bheja Masala Pav. With QSRs like Pao and Bao wowing us too, it’s time that the pao takes a bow!
