After allegedly assaulting his classmate with a knife, Nikhil Bankar killed himself
A police complaint filed against eve teasing and sexual harassment, three months ago with the Kherwadi police station, could not deter the ghastly act of stabbing-suicide, within the Chetna College campus on Saturday morning.
At around 8.30 am, 22 year-old Nikhil Bankar, a student of Chetna Institute of Management Studies, Bandra, in a fit of rage, allegedly assaulted his 21 year-old TYBMS classmate Payal Balsara. She sustained 10 stab wounds on her throat, vital organs and private parts. Her grievous injuries have landed her in the ICU ward of Guru Nanak Hospital.

The incident, which, ironically, happened on the last day of college and hours before the Annual Day function, did not end at the stabbing. Bankar, the only son of a sales tax official, apparently committed suicide by piercing the same knife into his stomach. After being treated for an hour, Bankar lost his life.
At the time of going to press, Balsara, who had undergone a fifth operation, was described as stable, in spite of huge blood loss. Bankar’s body, kept in the same hospital, was in the process of being sent for post mortem.
According to senior police inspector Avdhoot Chavan, after exiting the washroom, Balsara was taking the stairs to her second floor class, when Bankar intercepted her and started stabbing her. Chavan said, “Immediately after stabbing her, he pushed the knife into his stomach.”
According to police officials, Bankar and Balsara were in a relationship for the past year. However, both sets of parents opposed the relationship. Balsara, for the last one month, was trying to distance herself from Bankar who was adamant to continue the relationship. The matter was reported to college authorities and even the local police. The police added that both of them were going through regular counselling in the college itself.
A professor who was present at the police station said, on condition of anonymity, “I, along with others, rushed both of them to the hospital. The passage was covered in blood. I have never seen such a scene. I am still in shock.”
Bankar’s maternal uncle, who identified himself as Kadam, said that the family has not told the mother about the incident. “The ladies in the family are gently breaking the news to her by saying that Nikhil has met with a car accident. Nikhil would come back home straight from college and would seldom be seen loafing around with friends.”
Meanwhile, Balsara’s school friends from CF Andrew Convent, Kalina, gathered outside the hospital, to show solidarity. Friend Ashwini Patil, who studied with her, said that when Balsara’s parents shifted to Mira Road, she, “moved to her grandmother and uncle’s house in Kalina, which is much closer to the college.”
