How can comedy retail at a store? Three British stand-up comics are in town to tell you how

The Comedy Store has come a long way since it first flung open its doors above a strip club in London's Soho district in 1979.

For one, comics need no longer worry about having to change in a broom cupboard or needing to relieve themselves in a sink.

For another, you don't have to travel all the way to the UK capital to chuckle at insights into human nature over dinner and drinks.

"We had successful shows in June and October of last year, and so we know it works," says Comedy Store Founder Don Ward, who is confident about their brand of humour appealing to local tastes.

The stand-up performances over the weekend will include two 30-minute routines; one by Micky Flanagan and the other by Craig Cambell, with Paul Tonkinson playing emcee for the evening.

Subsequent weeks will see performances by a host of comics including Dave Fulton, Mick Ferry and Ian Moore.

The 24,000 sq ft space, located inside a shopping mall, will house a 300-seater auditorium, bar, diner and a cafe.

The tiered theatre-style space will see stand-up comedy performances every week from Thursday to Sunday, with other days reserved for options such as music or film.

Future plans include auditions for the best local stand-up comic talent later this month with auditions being held by Don Ward. "The gift of comedy comes in many shapes and sizes," says Don.

And as with any art, there are certain tricks of the trade that can be learnt. "As in life, timing is everything," says Don.

However, when it comes to that certain spark that sets a talented comic apart from the rest, Dan admits, there is no secret formula. "Comedians are born with funny bones."
